since I recently enjoyed listening to The One and Only Ivan, I added this book to my WTR list Ģ. It didn’t disappoint! We’re happy to have it in our collection.ġ. We read the physical book along with the audio narrated by Danny DeVito, which gave it even more of a comical feel.Įxploring themes of friendship, forgiveness, family, hope, trust, and also messages about the importance of caring for animals and those around us, this turned out to be the perfect sequel. It was nice getting Bob’s perspective on everything. Luckily, Bob still gets to visit Ruby and Ivan at the wildlife sanctuary where they now live, but one day a danger lurks over them and Bob needs to find courage within himself to be brave.īob’s story wasn’t as emotional as Ivan’s as it had plenty of funny, laugh-out-loud moments, but it was certainly just as good as Ivan’s in my opinion. He reflects on his sister who was lost when they were abandoned years ago and expresses some of the demons that still hang over him today. Here we learn some of his back story and also his perspective on life as a dog. In this story we follow our little four-legged friend, Bob, who’s now been adopted by Julia and lives a much better life. After reading The One and Only Ivan and learning that Bob would now get his own story, we couldn’t wait to read this. They despise experience as the wisdom of unlettered men and as for the rest, they have wrought under-ground a mine that will blow up at one grand explosion all examples of antiquity, all precedents, charters, and acts of parliament. Whilst they are possessed by these notions, it is vain to talk to them of the practice of their ancestors, the fundamental laws of their country, the fixed form of a constitution, whose merits are confirmed by the solid test of long experience, and an increasing public strength and national prosperity. It is no wonder therefore, that with these ideas of every thing in their constitution and government at home, either in church or state, as illegitimate and usurped, or at best as a vain mockery, they look abroad with an eager and passionate enthusiasm. She repeatedly abandoned her daughter, Tully, as a child, but now she comes back, drawn to her daughter’s side at a time when Tully is most alone. Nothing and no one seems to matter to her.until she falls in love with a young man who makes her smile again and leads her into his dangerous, shadowy world.ĭorothy Hart-the woman who once called herself Cloud-is at the center of Tully’s tragic past. Her father, Johnny, strives to hold the family together, but even with his best efforts, Marah becomes unreachable in her grief. Sixteen-year-old Marah Ryan is devastated by her mother’s death. Tully tries to fulfill her deathbed promise to Kate-to be there for Kate’s children-but Tully knows nothing about family or motherhood or taking care of people. She thinks she can overcome anything until her best friend, Kate Ryan, dies. Tully Hart has always been larger than life, a woman fueled by big dreams and driven by memories of a painful past. But stories end, don’t they? You lose the people you love and you have to find a way to go on. Once, a long time ago, I walked down a night-darkened road called Firefly Lane, all alone, on the worst night of my life, and I found a kindred spirit. Her “sparrow” training in the art of sexual espionage further complicates the mortal risks she must take, as does her love for her handler Nate Nash-a shared lust that is as dangerous as treason.Īs Dominika expertly dodges exposure, she deals with a murderously psychotic boss, survives an Iranian assassination attempt and attempts to rescue an arrested double agent-and thwart Putin’s threatening flirtations. The thrilling sequel to Red Sparrow-CIA insider Jason Matthews’s compulsively readable New York Times bestseller and Edgar Award winner-featuring Russian spy Dominika Egorova and CIA agent Nate Nash “shimmers with authenticity. Red Sparrow is now a major motion picture starring Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton! Wimsey is the archetypal British aristocrat who is bored and looking for something to do Wimsey is an amateur detective of some considerable ability and it is in this capacity that Harriet Vane calls for his help during the novel. The novel covers a pivotal time in Harriet's life as she also realizes that she has a tendency to hide in her writing and in academia in general, rather than facing difficult realities in her life. The experiences that she goes through in this novel really help her to be introspective and realize that she does love Wimsey, and she is finally able to both accept his love and offer him hers. Much of her confusion comes from her own inability to decide how she feels about love in general and being in love with Wimsey in particular. Harriet has a relationship of sorts with amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey, about whom she has conflicting and very confusing feelings. She is a mystery writer and a graduate of Shrewsbury College, Oxford, a period in her life about which she has decidedly mixed feelings she loved the student experience and the solace that she finds in academia and research, but she also went through a terrible ordeal there, and was forced to stand trial for murder. Descriptions of Mowat refer to his "commitment to ideals" and "poetic descriptions and vivid images" as well as his strong antipathies, which provoke "ridicule, lampoons and, at times, evangelical condemnation". Mowat's advocacy for environmental causes earned him praise, but his admission, after some of his books' claims had been debunked, that he "never let the facts get in the way of the truth" earned harsh criticism: "few readers remain neutral". For his body of work as a writer he won the annual Vicky Metcalf Award for Children's Literature in 1970. The latter, an account of his experiences with wolves in the Arctic, was made into a film of the same name released in 1983. He achieved fame with the publication of his books on the Canadian north, such as People of the Deer (1952) and Never Cry Wolf (1963). His works were translated into 52 languages, and he sold more than 17 million books. Set in Peru and following American characters, this book doesn’t shy away from the obvious discussion of colonialism and privilege in America. Nita lives in a world where supernatural beings are prized for their parts but despised for their being, but also look exactly like other humans. I never knew what was coming next - all I knew was that I was desperate to find out.Īnd better yet, this book features some seriously cool worldbuilding. It's almost a thriller and almost an urban fantasy book and either way, it's so fun to read. So first of all, this book is impossible to put down and so addicting. Not Even Bones follows Nita, a girl who dissects other supernatural beings for the black market - until she’s sold into the black market herself. You know how sometimes, you read YA fantasy and you just feel like it could have gone darker and it doesn’t? Not Even Bones just keeps Going There. This is a deeply fucked up book, in a good way. the "Dexter meets This Savage Song" comparison really encapsulates this?
